About This Course

In this course you’ll be guided through how to use Wikipedia, the world's largest free online encyclopedia.

We’ll cover logging in, editing an article, adding references, and everything to get you started on Wikipedia.

By the end of this course, you should have a good understanding of how Wikipedia works and feel confident to edit and contribute to it.

Some of the skills you will learn include:

* Who creates the content on Wikipedia

* How to create a Sandbox to practise editing

* Using the Wikipedia Manual of Style to understand how a Wikipedia article is formatted

* How to find reliable sources and use them to improve Wikipedia aricles

* Why copyright matters on Wikipedia

* Wikipedia's notability guidelines for new articles

* How to add new articles to Wikipedia

* How to translate articles into another language

* How to leave a message for other Wikipedia contributors

* How Wikipedia is just one part of the Wikimedia movement

* and more.

Requirements

Students will need to have a basic understanding of using a computer and web browser, as well as how to interact with a video player online.

James previously worked for Wikimedia Australia where he ran workshops on how to edit Wikipedia, and lead projects to create new articles on Wikipedia about Australian arts and culture. His background is in libraries, journalism, and research, with a particular interest in music.

How long does this course take to complete?

All together it will take you between 3-5 hours to complete this course, depending on whether you have used Wikipedia previously at all. But you’re encouraged to spend additional time practising to get the most out of this.
