About This Course
The Wiki Learning Kannada Wikipedia and Wikisource course is a structured learning program designed to introduce participants to contributing effectively to Kannada-language Wikimedia projects, with a primary focus on Wikipedia and Wikisource. This course is part of the initiatives of the Kannada–Tulu Language Group and aims to strengthen the ecosystem of free knowledge creation in Kannada by building confident, skilled contributors.
Through a combination of guided lessons, practical demonstrations, and hands-on editing exercises, learners will understand how Wikipedia articles are created, improved, and maintained, and how Wikisource supports the digitization and proofreading of public-domain Kannada texts. The course emphasizes Wikimedia principles such as neutrality, verifiability, copyright awareness, and collaborative editing, while also familiarizing learners with community norms and workflows.
Participants will explore key topics including wiki markup basics, article structure, references and citations, use of templates and infoboxes, and introductory concepts of Wikidata where relevant. For Wikisource, learners will gain exposure to page transclusion, proofreading status, and best practices for working with scanned books. By the end of the course, learners are expected to make meaningful contributions to Kannada Wikipedia and/or Kannada Wikisource and feel comfortable continuing their journey as Wikimedia contributors.
